INGREDIENTS: Chinese ginseng, Ophiopogon tuber, Schizandra berry. DUAL TONIC (Sheng Mai San, Pulse-activating Powder) is a classical formula developed around 1200 A.D. by Li Dong-Yuan, a famous scholar and physician. This formula has been extensively employed for over 700 years for deficiency in both Qi and Yin. It was one of the first Chinese herbal formulas to be researched through the Western scientific methods. For more than 40 years, extensive research has proven its multiple beneficial effects on the various systems and organs of the body. For the cardiovascular system, it significantly increases blood flow in the coronary arteries and reduces myocardial oxygen consumption MVO2, thereby protecting the heart from oxygen deficit and ischemia. It promotes DNA synthesis in the heart muscles, thereby helping heart cells recover from damage caused by a heart attack or other injury. It also has a dual regulating effect on blood pressure, i.e. it lowers blood pressure in hypertensive patients and raises blood pressure in hypotensives but does not affect those with normal blood pressure. For the blood system, this herbal formula reduces the viscosity of blood, thus inhibiting thrombosis and promoting fibrinolysis. It also improves microcirculation and prevents the onset of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). In the immune system it has broad actions. It can significantly increase the number of the body’s specific and non-specific immune cells, activate mononuclear-macrophage phagocytosis, inhibit IgE-induced release of allergic media, increase the number of T-lymphocytes in the blood, and raise lymphocyte transformation rate. It inhibits the central nervous system, prolongs the incubation period of convulsion and increases tolerance of hyperthermy and hypothermy. It has also been shown to have anti-fever and analgesic effects. For the adrenal glands, it can activate adrenocortical functions without causing thymus atrophy, hyperplasia or atrophy of the adrenal glands. In addition, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutation, anti-cancer, and anti-hyperlipidemia effects have also been confirmed. Clinically, it has been manufactured as a decoction, extract, tablets, capsules, muscular and intravenous injection. As either the primary or supplemental therapeutic medication, it has been effectively applied to acute heart attacks, angina pectoris due to coronary heart disease, arrythmia, heart failure, myocardiopathy, diabetes, shock, pulmonary tuberculosis, hypotension, altitude sickness, anemia, optic nerve atrophy, cancer, infectious mononucleosis, post-surgical fever, fever of unknown cause, postpartum fever and dizziness.
